As I've begun building my collection of the remastered albums by The Beatles, one thing I've noticed that's never really been quite so obvious is that Paul McCartney was a helluva bass player on those records. Sure, he never did anything incredibly fancy, but he always served the song. Some of his bass lines are so simple, but I can't think of any word to describe them besides brilliant. I think part of it may be that the remastered versions bring his bass more to the forefront, but maybe part of it could also be that I've gotten to a point where I've listened to enough music that I can appreciate quiet brilliance more than I ever have.
